Uzbekistan is a fascinating country in Central Asia full of historical sights that remind the traveler of glorious Silk Road times. Must see sights in Uzbekistan are Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.

Geography of Uzbekistan
In order to understand the climate and the best time to travel to Uzbekistan, let’s have a look at the topographical features of the country. More than half of Uzbekistan’s territory is occupied by Kyzyl Kum desert and the East of the country has some mountains. The elevation varies from -12m below sea level at Sarigamysh Kul to 4623 meters above sea level at its highest point Khazret Sultan. There are two major rivers called Amu Darya and Syr Darya. They both used to reach the Aral Sea, but its diversion for irrigation purposes led to the desertification of the lake. If you want to visit the cemetery of ships at the Aral Sea, you can fly to Nukus from Tashkent and drive to Muynak, which was once a fishermen’s village.
Uzbekistan – double landlocked country
Uzbekistan is one of the two countries in the world which is double landlocked, after Liechtenstein. Landlocked means that the country is surrounded by countries which do not have an access to oceans or high seas. In turn double landlocked means that the border countries of Uzbekistan and their neighbors also lack access to major oceans & seas. For Uzbekistan’s climate, it means very hot summers with temperatures reaching above 40°C and cold winters. Therefore, it is best to visit Uzbekistan from April to May or from September to October.

You can also visit Uzbekistan during summer if you are ready for temperatures over 40°C, but since the heat is dry it is also not too bad. Just always stay hydrated, put a sunscreen on and do not forget to put a hat and sunglasses on. Another option is to avoid heat from 12 pm to 3 pm and take a nap or enjoy green tea in one of many tea houses of Uzbekistan.
