The World Nomad Games offer an astonishing variety of traditional sports. Archery remains a visual highlight, with participants from all over the world competing in both traditional archery and horseback archery, along with precision contests like distance shooting.

Horseback Archery
Riders shoot arrows at full gallop, combining speed, balance, and precision in a breathtaking test of warrior heritage. It’s one of the most visually spectacular events at the World Nomad Games.

Traditional Archery
Archers dressed in national costume compete using handcrafted bows, often modeled after historical designs. Each archer demonstrates not just skill, but deep cultural pride rooted in centuries-old techniques.

Distance Shooting Archery
This event tests the raw power and accuracy of the archer’s draw, with participants aiming for the farthest distance rather than a static target. It’s a quiet yet intense display of strength and concentration.

Wrestling at World Nomad Games

From Kazakh Kuresi to Kyrgyz Kurosh, Kurash, and Pahlavani, wrestling at the World Nomad Games reflects deep cultural roots. Each style has its own techniques, dress, and philosophy, some more acrobatic, others grounded in strength and control.

International Wrestling Forms
Beyond Central Asia, the arena also hosts global traditions like Sumo, Mongol Bokh, and Sambo.

These matches draw huge crowds, celebrating the universal language of wrestling across cultures.

Strength Contests and Show Matches
Events like mas-wrestling, arm wrestling, and the Great Nomad Wrestling bring intense, close-up action. These competitions are crowd favorites for their raw energy and cross-border appeal.

Er Enish: Wrestling on Horseback
Er Enish blends strength, balance, and horsemanship in a contest where riders try to pull each other off their mounts. It’s a rare sport that demands full-body control and mutual respect between rider and horse.

Kok-Boru: The Ultimate Horseback Battle
In Kok-Boru, teams on horseback compete to carry a goat carcass across the field and score in a designated goal, a fast-paced, high-adrenaline spectacle. With riders leaning off galloping horses and locking in head-to-head battles, it’s the most iconic and intense sport of the Games.

Traditional Horse Races
Speed and stamina shine in races like At Chabysh, Kunan Chabysh, and Zhorgo Salysh, each celebrating the Central Asian horse’s unmatched endurance and rhythm. From long-distance contests to the unique pacing gait of the Zhorgo, these races are a proud showcase of nomadic equestrian heritage.

Traditional Strategy Games

Ordo: Strategy and Strength in the Dust

Ordo is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most cherished traditional games, deeply rooted in both military training and cultural memory. It is played with chuko, the polished astragalus bones from a sheep’s ankle, once collected and treasured by nomadic families. The game reenacts a symbolic battle for power: “ordo” means central command or headquarters. A circle drawn in the dirt represents a khan’s domain, and players must knock the central khan piece out of the circle to win. Once used by warriors to sharpen their strategic thinking, Ordo continues to teach coordination, skill, and planning in a competitive but accessible way.

Toguz Korgool, Mangala, and Oware are traditional board games that invite spectators into a quieter world of nomadic intellect. Played with small stones, seeds, or carved counters, these games rely on counting, memory, and strategic thinking. Passed down through generations, they remain widely loved across Central Asia and other parts of the world. Despite their simple materials, the games demand real concentration and reflect the value placed on mental agility in nomadic societies.

For those drawn to cultural heritage, the World Nomad Games offer much more than sports. Visitors can witness Burkut Saluu (eagle hunting), Dalba (falconry), and Taigan Zharysh (sighthound races).

Ethno-Village Experience in the Mountains
One of the highlights of the World Nomad Games is the ethno-village, set against a stunning mountain backdrop. Here, skilled horse riders demonstrate their mastery, galloping, turning, and even standing on horseback in breathtaking displays of balance and control. It’s a dramatic reminder of how deeply horsemanship is woven into nomadic identity.

Alongside the sporting events, there are competitions in yurt building, folk dance, and traditional crafts like felt-making, embroidery, and leatherwork. These contests showcase the skill and artistry passed down through generations and offer visitors a deeper understanding of nomadic daily life.

Many participants and performers dress in traditional clothing, representing their region or ethnic group with pride. From embroidered coats and distinctive hats to colorful dresses and handcrafted jewelry, the attire adds to the immersive cultural experience of the Games.
